Oklahoma State University is the only location in Oklahoma where an undergraduate degree in Statistics can be obtained.  The undergraduate program in Statistics is an ideal choice for the person who is intrigued by mathematics and computing but wants to work directly with people.

Statisticians are concerned with the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data.  They wind up working with people in virtually every known field of study.  Since statistics is used as a decision-making tool in so many areas, it is an ideal combination for a double major or as a preparation for graduate school.  Our program gives you a solid foundation in mathematics and computational skills, a sound working knowledge of statistics, and an introduction to some field of application.

The requirements for the statistics degree resemble those for an applied mathematics degree with some of the more advanced courses in mathematics replaced by statistics courses.  The greatest scholarship opportunities are available through the College of Arts and Sciences.  The Statistics Department offers awards and employment opportunities to students with good academic records who show leadership potential.

The undergraduate class in statistics is a small group who receives personal attention from faculty and the undergraduate advisor.  Students also enjoy the benefits of interactions and learning experiences with graduate students.

The degree requirements (PDF 1.6MB) are available for people who are interested in further details about this dynamic field of study.

The undergraduate minor in statistics requires 23 hours of study.  The required courses are:

  • STAT 4013  Statistical Methods I
  • STAT 4023  Statistical Methods II
  • STAT 4043  Regression
  • STAT 4091 (5910): SAS Programming
  • STAT 4203  Mathematical Statistics I

and

  • MATH 2144: Calculus I
  • MATH 2153: Calculus II
  • MATH 2163: Calculus III.

These courses must be completed with at least a 2.25 GPA and no grade below a "C".  If any of these courses should be required for the student's major, computer science courses (up to two) may be added as requirements.
