5. Formation of the DepartmentIn the spring of 1969, Dean George A. Gries established procedures enabling the Statistics program to work within the Department of Mathematics and Statistics as a semi-autonomous group. The directive from Dean Gries stated that “Subsequent to July 1, 1969, the statistics faculty will function as a recognized section within the Department of Mathematics and Statistics with its own chairman, but under the supervision of the head of that Department, in anticipation of a reorganization of the University’s program in the mathematical sciences.” The directive from Dean Gries also stated that “The responsibilities and prerogatives for the academic affairs of the statistical unit will rest within the unit. These include: 1) the conduct of the undergraduate and graduate programs in statistics, 2) the personnel matters of the staff and students including recruiting of personnel and recommendation of promotions and pay raises for its faculty as described below, and 3) nominations of its staff members to the Graduate faculty.”
